Being a momma is exhausting. Chasing babies that are learning to walk, teaching toddlers to talk and hold a fork, helping elementary age kids with math homework we barely understand… picking up after your husband… it’s hard sometimes! And it’s hard to find the time to take care of ourselves. I believe that it’s very important for mommas to take care of themselves, our babies need us at our best. That means getting enough sleep, eating properly, and taking the time to pamper and focus on ourselves.
I thought I’d start this series with looking at my Saturday night routine. It’s really convenient for me to have this time. We take care of two girls during the week, so my time alone is… never. I crave my Saturday nights because they’re home with their mom and I get the room to myself. I’m able to get a warm shower instead of having to jump in after the girls and wash everything that’s important before the water gets cold. I can do my devotions, meditate, and burn incense without disturbing their much needed sleep. I can watch “Criminal Minds” without worrying about what they’re hearing. Oh, did I mention we share a room??
My nighttime routine is a shorter version of my Saturday night routine, but Saturday is when I can truly start to rest. I start off by getting a shower. I nice, warm shower where I stand under the shower head and let the week wash off of me. I allow the water to cleanse me of the negativity that naturally surrounds my life. It’s wonderful.
This is what I use in the shower. I love my Herbal Essence bio:Renew shampoo and conditioner. My hair feels very healthy and it smells so good! Since I get my showers at night I use Clean & Clear nighttime cleansing face wash. I’m not sure what makes it a nighttime formula but I like it for my face and it just jump starts the rest of my routine. And this body wash… oh heavenly days. It smells phenomenal, it has a gentle exfoliant, and rose water is phenomenal for skin.
On Saturday’s I work on my face. I spend the time to make sure my face is clean and bright.
I buy these masks at Walmart for $1.50 and they are great. Peel off masks are so satisfying for me, so I like to use those, but I also use regular wash off masks and the masks that you lay on your face. The term is escaping me. This one is supposed to help make your face luminescent. Rose quartz also has some healing properties for your face, so that makes it doubly fun!!
Here’s my mug wearing the mask. No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to NOT get it in my hair or eyebrows, so that’s fun.
While I wait for the mask to dry, I focus on getting the rest of my body all soft.
First I put on Gold Bond Healing lotion on my feet. I slather the lotion on and then immediately put on my fluffy socks. Side note: I’ll never be disappointed in receiving fluffy socks or blankets as a gift. What this does is make sure that the lotion stays on my feet and traps the moisture in them. My feet have never been more soft since I started doing this and I will probably always do this.
During my normal night routine I’ll put the Gold Bond lotion on my hands, elbows, and shoulders. But seeing as this is a Saturday and I have more time, I use a sweet smelling Bath and Body Works lotion. I’m really into lavender these days because of it’s calming properties. I rub this on my arms, chest, and belly. I pay extra attention to my belly, while I rub I send intentions into my skin in order to help me lose the fat that has found it’s way to my belly. It also helps me to learn to love the body I’m in. I’m really far from that actually happening, but hey, it’s a step.
Then I brush my teeth. If I was doing a sheet mask (I finally figured out the term I was looking for), I would have saved this for after the fact. I’ve tried brushing my teeth with the sheet mask on and it just made a mess. I love the 3D Whitening line that Crest offers. It’s not really expensive but its very good.
Once the mask has dried, I peel it off. This time it took forever. My face must have been wet from the shower or steam, so some of the mask didn’t’ dry properly. That’s ok, because I used my toner to help me take it off. I love using toner, it makes my skin feel amazing!!! I use this during my normal nighttime routine to help keep my pores under control.
Then I put on a little under eye cream. This is good to use in the morning and the night… and it’s essential for when the baby decides she’s not going to sleep like normal. Just remember to use your pinky finger and dab it, not rub it, under your eye. A little goes a long way!! This brand isn’t terribly expensive, it definitely fits my tight budget.
Then I moisterize. The one thing I like is that you can find pretty decent store brand versions of name brand items. Clean and Clear Moisturizer was exponentially more expensive than the Target brand, and it does the same thing. I do have a favorite expensive moisturizer that I’ll do a post on at some point, but this does the job and it does it well. I don’t usually moisturize in the summer because I’m always sweating, but my skin CRIES for it when it’s fall and winter and everything is so super dry.
Every night before bed I swipe on some Relax lip balm (Lavender again). It definitely relaxes me and make my lips feel amazing. We sleep with our window open until it gets way too cold, so using this before bed helps my lips not get ridiculously chapped.
Now that I’m done in the bathroom, I head to my room for some quiet mediation and devotions. I’ve been lighting incense at least one time during the time the girls aren’t here and sage is my current go to. The amazing properties of sage just speak to me. It has a cleansing property that calms my spirit and allows me to focus on what God is trying to say to me during this time. This is were the true relaxing comes into play. I allow the smoke to waft over me and cleanse me of the negativity that I so frequently find myself in. It’s amazing and I highly recommend it. I got it from Walmart for pretty cheap!!! And my incense holder is the bomb . com!!
At night, when I remember, I do a devotion by Lysa Terkeurst that is phenomenal!! I highly recommend this book. Not only is it a beautiful book, but Lysa just speaks to me. I love her as an author. Ironically enough, the devotion I read tonight was about resting and using the Sabbath day as honoring God. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
I realize that most people don’t care about what others do at night. I’m not saying that this is the perfect way to have self care, but I am hoping that maybe someone is out there hoping for an idea on how to better care for themselves. It’s incredibly important that we find ways to keep ourselves healthy… and I don’t just mean with food. Mediation on God’s word and listening to him is a HUGE part of self care. If you’re not doing that, you need to start now. I’m extra and do devotions twice a day, but that’s what MY soul needs. That’s not necessarily what yours needs and you need to do what you feel God is calling you to do.
